Ask a class how they revise and most will describe some version of reading their notes again. It feels productive, and that is the problem: the conditions that feel smooth and productive, rereading and massed practice, mostly produce confidence without retention.
Roediger and Karpicke showed that students who were tested on material remembered far more, weeks later, than students who restudied it for the same time. The card puts the implication plainly: the testing is the learning, not the preparation for it.
