Why you might use it
Most revision defaults to putting information back in front of pupils: re-reading, highlighting, copying notes. The research in this guide points the other way. Retrieval, getting knowledge out, does more for long term memory than another pass over the page.
A brain dump is the simplest possible version of that. It needs no preparation, no question writing and no technology, and it gives you something a quiz cannot: a picture of what pupils reach for unprompted, and in what order.
What it might look like
Two lessons into a new topic, a class gets a blank page and two minutes: write everything you remember about last lesson. No notes, no talking. Afterwards, pupils open their books and check what they missed. The teacher asks for one thing that did not come back, and the answers shape the start of the next lesson.

End one lesson this week with it. Two minutes, blank page, everything you remember from today. Keep it out of any book you mark; the point is the retrieval, not the record.

Technology second
Paper does this job perfectly well. Where the approved shared document or whiteboard tool in your setting adds something is speed of reading: thirty attempts visible at once, skimmable for the gaps, without collecting a single book. The retrieval effort is the important part, not the admin around it.
