Between showing pupils the answer and asking for it cold sits a wide, useful middle ground. Tulving and Thomson showed retrieval depends on the cues available; a heading, a keyword, a diagram with its labels removed each triggers retrieval without doing the work.

Treat it as a rung, not a destination. Cued recall builds confidence before unaided retrieval, and it is a gentler restart for pupils who freeze at a blank page.

One version of it, in a classroom

A pupil who produced almost nothing in a free brain dump gets the same task with the topic's five subheadings printed down the margin. The headings cue what order things come in; the remembering between them is still the pupil's.

Keep a cued version of your usual retrieval task ready: the same questions with a keyword or first letter alongside. Moving one pupil down to it costs nothing.

What to notice

Reading what happens

  • Which cues bring the memory back and which draw blank looks. A cue that does nothing suggests the memory it points at was never secure in the first place.
  • Who still needs the cues after several rounds. The aim is to retire them, pupil by pupil.

Things to think about

Before and while you use it

  • Cues can drift into being answers. A sentence starter that contains the key term has crossed the line from triggering retrieval to replacing it.
  • Pair this with a plan to fade. Cued recall that never becomes unaided recall stops short of where consolidation happens.
