Five questions at the start of the lesson, on prior content, with nothing going in the gradebook. The routine is unremarkable to watch, which is rather the point: it makes regular retrieval a habit instead of an event.

The stakes are doing real work here. Agarwal found routine quizzing reduces test anxiety rather than causing it; when quizzing is frequent and nothing rides on it, it stops being a threat and becomes practice. As the card says, the quiz is not the assessment. It is the learning.

What it might look like

One version of it, in a classroom

A science class starts every lesson the same way: five questions on the board covering earlier topics, answered from memory in the back of books, self-marked in a minute. Nothing is collected and nothing is graded. The teacher notes which questions caused trouble and moves on.

What to notice

Reading what happens

  • Which questions the class keeps getting wrong. Those topics need reteaching, not just re-quizzing.
  • Whether the routine stays low-stakes in feel as well as in fact. Agarwal's finding shows up as pupils treating the quiz as normal.
  • How long it actually takes. If the starter is swallowing fifteen minutes, trim the admin, not the retrieval.

  • Keeping it out of the gradebook is not an optional nicety; the low stakes are what make the anxiety finding hold.
  • Self-marking keeps the workload at zero and puts the checking where it is most useful, in the pupil's hands, immediately.

Where technology fits

This is the routine where an approved quiz or response tool in your setting can genuinely help: quick two-minute starters every lesson with no marking, and results you can glance at while pupils move on. Let the tool manage the admin, the collecting and the scoring, and keep the retrieval effort with the pupils. If it starts to feel like a fastest finger first round, rewarding speed over thought, it is removing the difficulty that makes the practice worthwhile.

A prompt to start from, shaped by the STAIR approach (Specific, Tell, Actionable, Iterate, Role)
Act as a primary teacher who is a science specialist. Create retrieval questions on the water cycle for Year 5. Keep tightly to evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection. Present the output in clearly labelled sections.

Pupils should be able to demonstrate confident explanations and supply short applied questions.

Every question must include plausible distractors based on age-appropriate misconceptions.

Keep all questions concise with no added detail, definitions or answers.

Swap the role, topic and year group for yours, then iterate until the questions match what you actually taught. That's the I in STAIR. The judgement about which questions make the cut stays with you.
