Why you might use it

The problem it may help with

Ebbinghaus mapped the forgetting curve well over a century ago; Cepeda's work put numbers on the gaps that help most. The finding has not really changed: retrieval spread across days and weeks does more for retention than the same practice massed into one session.

The hard part is not believing it, it is timetabling it. Which is why the card aims this at your medium-term plan rather than your lesson plan: the calendar is part of the pedagogy.

What it might look like

One version of it, in a classroom

Planning a six-week unit, a teacher pencils review points in before the content: week three revisits week one, week five revisits weeks two and three, and the following unit opens by retrieving this one. Nothing about any single lesson changes much; the shape of the term does.

What to notice

Reading what happens

  • What the first spaced review reveals. Material that seemed secure at the time will have faded; that is the forgetting curve, not a teaching failure.
  • Whether the review points survive contact with a busy term. If they are the first thing cut, they were never really planned in.

Things to think about

Before and while you use it

  • Massed practice feels better in the room, for you and for pupils. Expect the spaced version to look worse lesson by lesson while doing more across the term.

Spaced repetition tools exist for exactly this problem: they revisit older material at the right intervals automatically, which matches the research while saving you the headache of tracking it manually. If your setting has an approved one, let it carry the scheduling. The intervals are the tool's job; making sure what comes back is worth retrieving remains yours.
