Why you might use it
Every lesson has a turning point where you decide, usually on a feeling, whether the class is ready to move on. A hinge question replaces the feeling with evidence: one diagnostic question, placed at the hinge, answered by everyone.
What makes it a hinge question rather than just a question is the design of the wrong answers. Each one maps to a misconception you already know pupils hold, so the spread of responses tells you not just how many are stuck but why.
What it might look like
A maths teacher planning a lesson on adding fractions writes one question for the midpoint, with four responses: the right answer, the classic add-tops-and-bottoms error, a common denominator slip, and a simplification mistake. Every pupil answers at once on whiteboards. The room's spread decides the second half of the lesson.

A polling or quiz tool, the approved one in your setting, gets you the whole room's answer at the hinge in seconds, with the spread visible instantly. The tool has done nothing until what it shows changes your next five minutes.
The expensive part of a hinge question is drafting distractors that map to real misconceptions. AI, through the approved tool in your setting, can draft them for you to judge. A STAIR-shaped prompt looks like this:
Act as a primary teacher who is a science specialist and create hinge questions on the water cycle for Year 5. Keep tightly to evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection. Present the output in clearly labelled sections and ensure each hinge question is quick to answer, focused on one precise idea and suitable as a decision point in the lesson. Ensure questions elicit the ability for Year 5 to apply their understanding with confidence. Every hinge question must include plausible distractors based on age-appropriate misconceptions so teachers can interpret pupils' thinking accurately. Keep the wording concise and avoid unnecessary detail, explanations or answers.
Swap the role, topic and year group for your own. Then do the part only you can do: check each distractor against the misconceptions your pupils actually hold, and iterate until they match. That's the I in STAIR, and it's where the diagnostic power comes from.
